Brief description:

Choquequirao is located above the valley of Apurimac River which is 98km from Cusco city centre. Also known as "Cradle of Gold" it was built during the late 15th and early 16th Century. A great alternative trek to the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This 5 day trek will show you mountains with a variety of flora and fauna along with a varied climate. The ruins have been partially cleaned by COPESCO - the governmental institution who are responsible for the tourism in Peru. It covers more then 8 hectares and only a single third has been discovered. The archaeologists discover more every day.
